WHAT IS TMD?

Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD) refers to disorders causing pain and dysfunction of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and the muscles connecting the jawbone to the skull. One common symptom of TMD is facial pain.

CAUSES OF TMD FACIAL PAIN

When the jaw comes out of alignment, it also affects the muscles, nerves, and bones surrounding it. The muscles of the face can become strained or have spasms because they’re working harder to compensate for the misaligned bite. The extra strain may cause facial pain to radiate from the TMJ.

SYMPTOMS OF TMD FACIAL PAIN

  • The pain can be sudden and severe, or it can be a dull recurring pain.
  • The pain is usually on one side of the jaw.
  • The pain can last for years or temporarily.
  • The pain becomes worse while chewing, yawning, clenching, or grinding the teeth.
  • The pain is more intense when you awake in the morning.
  • The pain is present with other TMD symptoms such as migraines, limited jaw movement, and clicking or popping of the TMJ.

Remember, there are many causes of facial pain. Getting a proper diagnosis is the first step toward resolving the pain. If you treat the symptoms and not the cause of the pain, the cycle repeats itself.

We make a detailed review of your medical history and complete a comprehensive examination of your head and neck.
